Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or just slathered with butter, this bread is sure to become a staple in your home. Plus, making bread from scratch is a great way to introduce your little ones to the joys of baking!

Why Make Bread from Scratch?

Baking your own bread means you control the ingredients, ensuring a healthier, more wholesome loaf without unnecessary preservatives. It also teaches kids valuable kitchen skills, patience, and the reward of creating something delicious with their own hands.

Ingredients:

You Will Need:

  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm liquid (water, milk, kefir, buttermilk, or a combination)
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 5 to 7 cups all-purpose flour
  • Melted butter for brushing over the loaf when done

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of warm water, raw honey, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes, or until the mixture is frothy. This step ensures your yeast is active and will help the bread rise beautifully.
  2. Mix the Dough: Add the remaining 1-1/2 cups of warm liquid, melted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Slowly mix in 5 cups of flour, one cup at a time, stirring until the dough starts to come together. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add more flour until it is soft and slightly tacky but not overly sticky.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. To check if it’s ready, perform the windowpane test by stretching a small piece of dough between your fingers—if it forms a thin, translucent sheet without tearing, the gluten is well-developed. If using a stand mixer with a dough hook, knead on low speed for about 5–7 minutes, checking for the same windowpane effect.
  1. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1-1/2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  2. Shape the Loaf: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a loaf and place them into greased loaf pans. Cover again and let them rise for another 30–45 minutes, until they have doubled in size.
  1. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Bake the loaves for 30 minutes. Then, cover them loosely with foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 190°F.
  2. Finishing Touch: Remove the bread from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for a soft and golden crust. Allow the loaves to cool in the pan for 15–20 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Tips for Success:

  • If baking with kids, let them help knead the dough—it’s a great hands-on experience!
  • Store the bread in an airtight container or wrapped in a kitchen towel for freshness.
